Opinion: President does not support Superman

OpEd by Glen Davis

Obama proclaimed May as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage month. He’s stocked up on Dos Equis for Cinco de Mayo. And he has proclaimed May 1 Law Day.

Interesting that he selected to celebrate John Adams this “Law Day.”

He did not honor Thomas Jefferson who said, “Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add ‘within the limits of the law’ because law is often but the tyrant’s will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual.”

“On this Law Day, I encourage all Americans to celebrate and reflect upon the example left to us by President John Adams and our centuries of adherence to the rule of law.”

His adherence to the rule of law included the Alien and Sedition acts limiting free speech and immigration.

He did not forget to mention, however, that today is also Loyalty Day.

When our Nation’s Founders adopted the Declaration of Independence, they pledged to build a government that represented America’s highest ideals, a Union that secured its people’s sacred rights by “deriving [its] just powers from the consent of the governed.” From the Revolutionary War to the formation of our young country, our Founders’ commitment to this principle never wavered. In the fall of 1787, America launched its improbable experiment in democracy, embedding in our Constitution the core values of liberty, equality, and justice for all.

Throughout our proud history, Americans motivated by loyalty and fidelity to these principles have worked to perfect our Union. Our Constitution grants Americans unprecedented freedoms and opportunities. We are free to speak our minds, worship as we please, choose our leaders, and criticize them when we disagree (if you don’t mind being called racists). The liberties enshrined in our founding documents define us as a people and a Nation, ensuring that every American with the drive to work hard and play by the rules has the chance to build a better life for their children and grandchildren.

He, therefore, Barack Obama proclaims,

In order to recognize the American spirit of loyalty and the sacrifices that so many have made for our Nation, the Congress, by Public Law 85-529 as amended, has designated May 1 of each year as “Loyalty Day.” On this day, let us reaffirm our allegiance to the United States of America, our Constitution, and our founding values.

Loyalty Day was instituted to counterbalance International Worker’s Day, or May Day, which celebrates Communist unionization.

There you go, Superman. The president has proclaimed that you should reaffirm your allegiance to the United States. Interesting that you chose this month to deny your citizenship, isn’t it?

Perhaps, when you get your head straight, you can even convince the president to follow his own advise.
